What Service means as a scholar
Service as a scholar should not only be a requirement, but it should be a desire.
A passion to use what you know. A need to learn more from a service performed. To me this is what service is.
Service can be with your local community, a scholarly organization, an internship, or the mentoring of students.
Belonging to multiple organizations means nothing unless you give something to it and take something from it. Same for internships. If you can’t reasonably explain why you’re doing something, what it is about, and what you’re getting out of it, then you aren’t performing a service.
I try to give back some of my time to every organization I belong to. It feels really good to help out and at least give as much as you take.
I have served on a CTE board for the Bryan ISD. I helped develop program guidelines for makerspace and fabrication courses on this committee.
I have served on two ethics committees in the College of Engineering at Texas A&M University. Ethics supports my goal of Apprenticeship and is the backbone of any soft skill training.
My internships were both unpaid and sacrificed a lot of my free time. Both were well worth it. I not only gained a myriad of technical and professional experience, but I made friends for life.
Below is a list of scholarly services I have performed.
Organizations I belong to
I have been a member of ASEE and SME since 2000. I have attended and volunteered at 2 events at each organization.
I am recent newcomer to AECT and AERA, but I feel I spend the most time lately working with them.
Academic Offices I have held
I am currently the Ethics officer for the AECT Graduate Student Assembly (GSA). In this capacity, I am also on the AECT Ethics board. I was elected in Nov 2021 and began serving in Dec of 2022. My main focus will be to enlighten my AECT members about student Intelectual Property rights and how to ethically source design projects.
In Dec 2022, I was asked to join a new committee, the GSA fundraising committee. This committee will oversee fundraising for the president of the AECT GSA and advise on events.

I also spend 2 hours helping new immigrants learn the English language each week. All of these students are working for citizenship, and they are highly motivated.

I was fortunate to be able to do two unpaid internships during my ISDT program. Both internships gave me invaluable educational experience and extended my professional network.
At the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ), I worked with a team to develop an Articulate Studio training course for professional development.
My internship at Texas A&M University involved working with the Chief Technology office and setting up a Canvas Catalog site. This site will house all the internal training for their shared service facility.
